Telling a Story Well

Want to improve how well you tell your stories? Here are my 5 very quick tips for clear and concise communication material.

1.Work out what you want to say

Identify what your main message is and consider your target audience.  Understand your audience and write your message for them.

2. Refine your messages

Choose an angle for your story that will capture your target audience’s attention.  Once you have your angle you can then think about your headline.  Consider placing the focus on the benefits, outcomes and highlights – let your audience know why they should take the time to read your story.

3. Craft the story

Order your content to suit the message and format.  Break up the copy by using headings or bullet points.

4. Form the right tone

Make your words count – short but sweet to ensure you don’t lose the reader’s focus.

Use an active voice to sound clear and authentic and choose clear words and phrases for a clear and engaging tone.

5. Apply online style

Keep your copy search-friendly and easy to scan.

Write effective hyperlinks with a clear call to action.
